How is speaking with a counsellor different from talking with a close friend?

| Focus
| You, your thoughts, feelings, values, and life meaning. | Mutual focus on both parties and shared experiences. |

| Power Dynamics
| Therapeutic alliance with structure, supervision, and ethical guidelines to support autonomy. | Fluid dynamics; can be influential based on closeness, care, or hierarchy within the relationship. |
| Primary Outcome
| Insight, coping skills, self-awareness, and lasting change aligned with your goals. | Support, connection, empathy, and mutual care; growth may be indirect. |
| Conversation Style
| Strategic questioning, reflective prompts, and techniques to uncover meaning and restructure thoughts. | Open, sharing, and responsive dialogue; spontaneous and relational. |
| Timeframe & Focus
| Often goal-oriented with planned sessions and measurable progress. | Ongoing, relationship-driven; progress is relational and context-based. |
| Confidentiality
| Strict confidentiality within legal/ethical boundaries; disclosures are not shared without consent (except risk concerns). | Privacy depends on the individuals; not protected by professional ethics in the same way. |
